Campaign: The Summit of Shadows
The Council plans to build a cable car on Watzmann mountain while disregarding the nature’s beauty. Is the party too late or are they able to stop the project.
Created May 4, 2025 - Last updated: Jul 8, 2025
This campaign is a hybrid ruck event lasting 10 weeks and is intended for training for an upcoming Munich Rucking Crew event in July.
To participate register at Codeberg. This will be used for all official communication.
Next read the welcome post and comment your role, name of the player, and optionally your backstory of the player.
This campaign has a #difficulty = 10
.
This campaign uses the Bribery Clause and Meta Clause for its in person sessions.
This campaign is using the rules v0.12.1 and will change throughout campaign.
The campaign requires a main location like a hill peak or alternatively Point of Interest like playground, sculpture, etc. that is best to be at least 1 mile away. This will be referenced throughout the story as peak and is a vital story element.

Story
Many people start hiking up a mountain. Some know each other while others don’t. With each step the bottled up pain is slowly being verbalized and like minded individuals are slowly bundling themselves around each other. Friendships slowly form and each share their backstory to the party
(Player shares their backstory to the party, especially highlight their role, and their goal from this odyssey.)
At the peak, the party breaks bread and shares a round if not two of a flask that some participants have brought along.
They make it safely down the mountain and promise each other to stay in touch!
Session 1
The party meets up again with the goal to train for the climb to the peak of the Watzmann. One party member suggests
Before we even attempt to climb the Watzmann, we should at least be able to do its children.
Some members have a confuse facial expression and one questions
What do you mean with “its children”?
They reply
The Watzmann mountain has 5 smaller peaks that lead to the top. These smaller peaks are considered as the children of Watzmann.
Which child do you suggest we start off with?
Let’s us start with the first child and progress from their.
The party discussed the suggestion and choose one of the children.
The party is required to complete ascending to all the five children before attempting to climb the Watzmann.
WOD 1
The party needs to choose one of the five children:

Ruck back to the start. Bonus suitcase ruck carry.
Session 2
The party chose a different strategy to tackle the task given. Instead of the party hiking together one peak, they sent each member up their own peak. This way each participant can report back the difficulties of the journey.
On the way down the paths converge. Bare and Dan talk about the hardships of their chosen route and return to their sleep corridors.
The next morning both, although sore, can’t await to tackle the next peak.
The first couple hundred meters both grumble internally awaiting for the body to warm up and the soreness to subdue.
Halfway up, they see another hiker who is bleach pale in their face.
(Choose to help or ignore fellow hiker.)
After helping/ignoring the fellow hiker Bare and Dan choose their peak of the day.
WOD 2
The party needs to choose one of the five children that they have not chosen yet:

The timer starts again after finishing the previous random encounter. Insight only lasts for 1 random encounter.
Once you get to the peak all random encounters stop.
Session 3
Dan and Bare took upon the that their buddy talked about the previous week, since they got the insight on the best tactics to tackle the peak. They both helped the fellow hiker together which gave them a boost in motivation in tackling the chosen peak.
Once they came back to the sleep corridors, they shared their experiences of the peak.
On the next day they know that they have 3 more peaks to go and realize that after today’s peak they are already halfway done.
WOD 3
The party needs to choose one of the five children that they have not chosen yet:
If the party successfully helped the fellow hiker, check the side quest line to learn what it has unlocked. These unlocks are optional replacements.

Session 4
After a long crawl to the peak, Dan and Bare struggled to reach the final meters.
They chose the same peak, while Bare made it to the peak, he saw how Dan was struggling, dropped his ruck, and went down to help Dan with the final meters.
At the top, they both took a well deserved break and then made their way down towards Guenter’s hut.
At the hut, the party dispersed some stayed at the hut while the rest went back to the valley. The party made plans to meet up outside the hut tomorrow at 08:00.
The following morning, the party members were on time at the meeting point while those who stayed the night didn’t look like they were fully rested.
Nonetheless, once all were together, the atmosphere became ecstatic, since they knew that they only had 2 peaks left. The team discussed what peak they want to tackle next and decided afterwards to grab some beverages at Guenter’s hut.
Side Quests 4
All side quests are an optional storyline. This means you can choose to use it as an alternate to the main storyline. This can make certain aspects easier and/or other aspects harder. If you choose to do a side quest, then you are required to do the full side quest for the respective session.
You can do as many side quests at once, though there is no guarantee that they will overlap well with each other.
The consequences from the side quests are stackable and can cancel each other out. This is under discretion of the team leader or GM.

During the journey of tackling the 5th peak and right before summitting the final peak, you see a mature man in Lederhosen sparking up conversations with each passer by. His calves are the size of our quads and his quads are just as well defined as each bark groove in a tree.
You are intrigued by his physique and charisma and can’t wait until it is your turn to listen to his sermon.
Grinding with each step slowly approaching this man and as of arm reach where you feel disgusted with the grime and sweat from the past four peaks you are greeted by a full motivating smile. You just feel as if his mountain goat aura engulfs your body plus soul and rejuvenates them.
Wow you are getting an extraordinary hike today with the flora and fauna in full bloom! My name is Erich Berger and I am informing hikers just like you of the secretive shadows wanting to destroy this beauty.
In all your exhaustion and constant downwards looking to make sure you don’t roll an ankle you total forgot of your surroundings. You place down your ruck, stand up tall while stretching your back, hearing the air cracking from the release of spinal pressure. You survey your current surroundings and are amazed how well Erich’s words fit to the current situation. In the distance you see mountain goats scurrying along the curvier. Behind yourself you see two big horn sheep grazing on some weeds. Below your feet there are butterflies flying in a majestic dance.
Finally after catching your breath, you are intrigued in Erich’s statement and ask:
What do you mean secretive shadows wanting to destroy this beauty?
Erich replies
the sun will set soon and I see you are planning to go to the top. If this concern still plagues your mind after your hike today, I will be hosting an info seminar next week by the amphitheatre.
You thank him for acknowledging the time sensitivity of the daylight and giving him confirming words that you will be there.
Start off with the Leg’s Crusher Mini-WOD.
Ruck at least 1 mile away to the peak.
At the peak do another Leg’s Crusher Mini-WOD.

If you did stay at Guenter’s hut, then start the session there.
You have completed all 5 child peaks and are ready to tackle the Watzmann. You get your gear ready and are about to leave when your buddy attention
Don’t we want to check out what Erich is going to preach at the amphitheatre!?
Conflicted with hiking the Watzmann or going to the seminar, you don’t know which is better.
You discuss with the team and one critical point came up
We can hike to the Watzmann any day, but I doubt we can listen to Erich’s seminar any day.
Thus with the team’s help, you decide to go to the seminar.
WOD 6
Ruck at least half a mile to an amphitheatre or any location where you can do step ups. If you stayed at Guenter’s hut, then ruck at least 1 mile.

Workout 6
Erich introduces himself and starts speaking of the scenario which is about to unfold
The South Bavarian Tourist Council plan to build a cable car to boost tourism in the area. They plan to build it up to the top of the Watzmann and have already broke ground at the base. They want to deceive the towns folk by explaining that they have already put thousands of DM into the project and have already installed the first cable cart poles.
We can still stop them by first protesting at the construction sites, second by figuring out who is lobbying this agenda and go after them, and third by sharing this disgust and deceitfulness with your neighbors and anyone else you know.
I urge you to tell your neighbors in what is about to unfold. It is not too late to stop them. The more support we can get for this movement, the more likely we are able to stop their greed.
I leave you with this question: “Is this natural beauty really worth giving up for a bit higher financial gain for the town?”
Stunned by what you just heard and look at your team mates. You see them all just as shocked as you are.
Before you go and spread the horrors, we will meet every morning at Guenter’s hut to discuss what the daily action plan will be. For now, just let my words engulf your thoughts and if you agree to help, then start spreading the word.

Ruck back to the start.
If you have not unlocked Guenter’s side quest line yet, then make sure that the ruck back is at least 1 mile. This unlocks that side quest line.
Session 7
For the next 4 weeks each party member is required to get a cumulative amount of altitude gain equivalent to the height of the Watzmann (2713 m). The altitude gain for MRC Alps Ruck counts towards this number which equates to 28 m (via car) or 627 m (via public transit).
This altitude gain can either be down via the weekly workouts or via challenges like Scout 5. At the end of each workout one can do a bonus of step ups to get the required altitude. It is best to measure the step height.
The team has decided to spend the next nights at Guenter’s hut to reduce the need to hike upwards before getting the daily objective.
In the morning, right after breakfast, they see a special room being unlocked and the Watzmann protesters flood the room. Erich takes his place at the head of the table and starts the discussion of the action plans.
We have two tasks to tackle, either you can hike up to one of the construction sites, actively strike, and prohibit the workers from work, or you can go to the town hall and sneakily listen in on the discussions with South Bavarian Tourism Council.
One of the protesters suggests
We should have a quick poll, so that like-minded individuals can group together and discuss in more detail on what is the best attack vector.
Choose wisely between
Each is an unique quest line and progress further from the specific chosen quest line.
Session 8
Each party returns to Guenter’s hut and reports their day. Although the heat was high, no protesters collapsed from heat stroke. And the party at the town hall was able to hear what the upcoming plans are for continuing the building project.
The following morning, they share in special room what they have heard.
The mayor of the town is deeply in dept and the South Bavarian Tourism Council will pay his debt only if he permits the construction of the cable car. Additionally, if he refuses to go through with the project, the Council will leak how he has been skimming high percentages of the past projects into his own pocket which he in return completely lost while gambling. Not only did the mayor lose the money, but also exceeded the lost.
One of the listeners asked
What projects are we talking about here?
Do you remember when the town was upgrading the sewage system. Well, to cut costs, he didn’t let the water be treated and completely dumps it to the local river. So anyone who lives down stream and uses the water for crops irrigation is flavoring it with human waste.
The listeners are shocked and some of the farmers just gasp.
Another example is the construction of the new mall a couple years ago where it was promised to only permit local investors to have retail. This is only a mirage and in the background he sold off all the seats to foreign investors who in return bought up local investors to push their products.
Another participant comments
I was wondering why everything was so cheap, I am so disgusted of this level of corruption!
A final example is the newly constructed bridge to enter the town, he hired a group that is known to use the least quality construction material and then bribed the quality assurance technician to look the other way.
Do you mean the one I and my kids travel everyday to go to employment and school?
Yes, exactly that one. It is a ticking time bomb and only a question of time until it collapses. You are safer off going the long way around the Hausberg.
The participants become unstable. Erich steps in and shares
I know this is shocking news to hear and many will now change your habits after hearing this disgust. Though this won’t help us stop the construction. We need to stand strong and continue to inform your fellow citizen. The South Bavarian Tourism Council has deep pockets and it won’t be that easy to remove them from our town.
Continue with your chosen quest line
Session 9
Both groups are too tired to report their success to others, thus conversations first shall start in the morning.
In the morning, after breakfast, all participants meet up in room.
One member of the protest construction site group steps forward to share their progress.
We were able to block any progress at the various construction sites and were able to inform the workers of the deceitful plan that some have even joined us in the protest.
Everyone claps with the positive outcome.
One member of the sneaking group steps forward to discuss further steps.
We took the time to devise 5 plans on how we can stop the construction and revert all the evil the mayor has placed on our town.
In the next two sessions you are required to finish all 5 plans, which are workouts. Best is to do 3 in session 9 and 2 in session 10, though you are open to choose otherwise. Additionally, you can do each workout on a separate day, if you choose this option, then the buy in and buy out are required each time.

The challenge is to move weight for a distance. Gear is considered as ruck or sandbag. Move half your body weight divided in gear weight in 3 disciplines, each at least 100 m and totaling to 500 m. The goal is to achieve 1/2 bw lbs * 500 m
with bw
body weight in lbs.
- lunges with gear
- bear crawl with gear on and/or gear pull
- suitcase or farmer’s carry of gear
For example you weigh 200 lbs and your ruck is 30 lbs, then possible break down is
- 500 m lunges:
500 * 30 = 15 000 lbs * m
- 500 m bear crawl:
500 * 15 = 15 000 lbs * m
- 667 m suitcase carry:
667 * 30 = 20 000 lbs * m
Or your ruck is 40 lbs and sandbag 60 lbs
- 150 m lunges:
150 * 100 = 15 000
- 150 m bear crawl:
150 * 100 = 15 000
- 200 m farmer’s carry:
150 * 100 = 20 000
Child 4
4 rounds without ruck
10 * #team + 10
reverse step up10 * #team + 10
alternating sidewards crab walk
#team + 2
rounds with ruck/sandbag
- 8 dead lifts
- 8 cleans
- 8 overhead press
- 8 rows
Child 5
Long or heavy ruck; carry either twice the load or do twice the distance.
- twice the load of at least 2 mile
- twice the distance of at least 4 miles
Side Quest: Helped fellow hiker (Guenter)
After helping the fellow hiker, he appreciates what you were able to do. He then says
Thank you for your help! I was hunting chamois (Gemse) all night and one broke off the herd and ran downhill which was unexpected since they usually don’t like temperatures higher than 12 °C. This intrigued me and I wanted to understand its actions. Since it was unexpected that I was going to stay out so long, I didn’t bring extra gear.
On a second look you notice the gamsbart on his hat. He continues
By the way my name is Guenter and people in the town call me “Guenter the Gams Jaeger” (Guenter the chamois hunter). I own a hut with my wife in the center of the Watzmann’s cirque. If you ever need a place to crash, my door is always open for hikers who follow the mountain creed.
You thank Guenter for his invitation and brush off the task of helping as no big deed.
The party gains the ability of only requiring half a mile to reach the peak, since you can stay at Guenter’s hut.
This means one can start the 10min random encounter timer, once one is half a mile away from the peak instead of from your home position.
Guenter: Session 3
Before going to your third peak of choice, you decide to stop by Guenter’s hut to see how he is doing.
He is outside, working on a freshly killed chamois. As you approach the hut, Guenter notices you and his face grows in full joy.
Berg Heil my friends. Come in and meet my wife Elise. She has been wanting to meet you.
You go into the hut and meet Elise. She offers you a beverage before proceeding in conversation.
Many newcomers think that my Guenter is a particular man, but they fail to realize that most towns people are this way. Thus if you like to meet the others, just turn in before you hike down or if you like you can always stay the night. The only thing we ask is that you help with some chores around the hut.
You thank Elise for the beverage and say your good byes to them.

For each pound of coupon weight you carry as suitcase carry reduce the percentage of exercises required for the workout.
The every 10min a random encounter condition still persists, though the exercises will reduce in percentage depending on the suitcase carry weight. All random encounters stop after one has reached the peak.
Example
You carry a 40 lbs sandbag. This means you need to 40 % less exercises or 60 % of exercises. E.g. if you choose to do the workout child 3, then the equation is 0.6 * 1/2 bw * 500 m
.
Guenter: Session 4
On the way back down you decide to stay the night at Guenter’s place. You are not the only guests for the night. Elise shares
Dinner is at 19:00 and breakfast at 07:00.
This gives you 15min to get your sleep corridors ready before dinner.
At dinner, you ease drop on a conversation from the other table talking about a gondola that the tourism agency plans to build. You are shocked to hear these plans and go to bed contemplating what you have just heard.
In the morning you wake with your clothes slightly damped and then you remember the horrible nightmare you had last night about what you heard the previous night. You quickly get them off not to draw any attention before breakfast.
You eat up breakfast in a swift matter and see your party has already made it to the hut for the next peak.

Example: Child 4
Add 25% more rounds with the minimum being one additional round.
Example: Child 5
Either 25% more load or 25% more distance.
Guenter: Session 5
Choose one of these three beverage types:
A
: Hot beverageB

: Hydrating beverage
It becomes the <chosen beverage>
.
You turn in for the night at Guenter’s hut after going hard on <chosen beverage>
.
While in bed, you toss and turn, and just believe how you were able to drink d6 + 3
<chosen beverage>
.
Another turn, another toss, and you cannot believe that it is already morning.
You jump out of bed in a swift manner and go to breakfast.
At the breakfast table you smell a wiff of the <chosen beverage>
and are about to purge, though you remember the wisdom that if ain’t working without, they it might with. Thus, you spur up all your motivation not to spit out the first sips of the <chosen beverage>
.
The first drop of the <chosen beverage>
reaches your lips and although the smell reeks, for some reason the taste is quite welcoming. You don’t just take a sip, but you chug the <chosen beverage>
instantly. You feel as the liquid travels through your throat and reaching the stomach. Once all the liquid has made it to your stomach, you get this warm feeling throughout the body and feel rejuvenated.
You finish up breakfast, get your ruck ready for the last peak, and start your way towards the final peak.

There are currently 5 sites being worked on and from the poll you were able to deduce that a total of 6 individuals are interested. To successfully stop the construction from progressing you need at least 2 people at each site.
You will need to construct a plan on how to get more individuals to help you. You noticed that the other group has some extra, try to convince them to join your group instead.

Quest Line: Sneakily listen into discussions
You and some of your team members have chosen to sneakily listen into the discussions. The discussions will start soon and you will need to come up with a story of why you are at the town hall without creating suspicions. From the poll you have deduced that a total of 8 people are interested, though you know that large groups draw too much attention and need to drop the group size to a max of 4.
Your first task is to convince 4 individuals to go help the protesting crew.
Next you need to create a plausible story of why you need to be at the town hall.

WOD Sneak: Don’t Get Caught
You successfully were able to convince 4 individuals to leave your group, it was harder than expected as if they knew that they didn’t want to stand in the sun.
Make your way down to the town hall while you decide your legitimate <reason>
for being there.
You have 4 attempts of not being caught. Choose one of these 4 animal movement:
- Crab walk with ruck
- Bear walk with ruck
- Low crawl with ruck
- Bunny hops with ruck
You roll a
and if the number aligns with animal movement, then you were not caught and do5 x 4ct of the animal movement
, else you are caught and do 10 x 4ct
of the animal movement. Then present your <reason>
for being there and roll
(1: believed, 2: not believed) or GM judgement. If not believed, you get dragged away by the guards and get locked up in the jail.
After the 4 attempts,
- each time you were caught do
25 x 2ct ruck lunges
, and - each time you were jailed do
50 x 4ct jumping jacks
.
Examples for an attempt
- You are not caught, so only lower count of animal movements.
- You can get caught but have a plausible reason for being at the town hall. Thus you would do the animal movements immediately and later when tallying all instances up, you would add the ruck lunges but not the jumping jacks.
